Greetings from Guatemala! We awake on Sunday morning after a long but incident-free day of travel on Friday. That this is really happening seems to hit many of us the minute we get out of La Aurora (name of airport necessary for customs forms) and into the crowds waiting for friends and family. Doris and Julio are among them and greet us with hugs and smiles.
The ride to Antigua isn't long, especially since we're spending most of it eating "the best cookies in Guatemala" (thanks, Julio!) and waving back and forth with a truckload of little kids crammed into the back of a pick-up. When we arrive at Casa Christina the power is out on the whole block, but that only makes the setting more beautiful: candles dot the hallway floors and provide light for our rooms, giving the whole place an aura of magic.
In the morning, the power is back but the magic isn't gone. The pictures come from the rooftop garden, and the way the sun hits the 500-year-old city is simply astonishing. Sunday morning is a time for worship, and on this day, it seems we're getting a nice head start.
